i get only a black screen after the Facebook load screen, rebooted as well.

It depends on the speed of your USB device. If you use an old USB 1.1 stick you're most likely in for a long wait...

For me it take about 2 hours to restore the image to the USB drive. That is a VERY long time - do you also have the same problem?

All my USB sticks are 4gb and would not work so i used my 128gb Western Digital external hard drive and the install worked great following the same steps as if i was using a USB stick thanks a lot for the tutorial this was very helpful and only took 20 minutes to install

if you installed lion without taking a backup of the image, try this. open app store, choose option/alt and purchases. you should see a "install" option. Click that. you are all set.

The DVD method described in this post doesn't work. Use the USB drive method described above and this works fine.

The DVD method takes ages anyway. Just use USB

Just followed the USB stick instructions and it works fine. The USB method results in a set of files though unlike just burning the dmg file.

If you these instructions to the letter it works like a charm.

The DVD method doesn't work though, you need the contents of the dmg file not just the dmg file and the USB instructions provide you with this.

You can find installesd.dmg on your time machine -> Macintosh HD->Mac OS X Install Data ->Installesd.dmg
During downloading/installation of Lion by the first restart the data goes to the time machine if installed in your setup.

I successfully recovered a Snow Leopard System using Time Machine, but it's always good to have a second way of restoring. Have a look at SuperDuper for example.

Also, can you please tell me if I'll be able to recover everything from a Time Machine back up?
Or should I do some other kind of backup?

The DVD method doesn't work for me, it gets to about 75% done then just doesn't get any further. It quotes 15 minutes left then 16 then 20 etc and just never completes.

Might try the USB method tomorrow. It's ridiculous this. Call me old fashioned but give me a good old DVD disk any day over this app store update.

App store update is fine but if you are an experienced user and want a nice fresh install you should be able to have one.

IMO you can't beat a fresh install of a new os. I know we are talking apple here and not microsoft but even so a clean install is better. You should at least have the choice.
